Cultural Work Exchange
Traveling through Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador through cultural work exchanges provided an education unlike any classroom could offer. Rather than moving through places as a tourist, the experience created opportunities to live within communities, contribute to local projects, and develop a deeper understanding of the people, landscapes, and traditions that shape each region.
The work itself varied from sustainability initiatives and hospitality roles to language exchange and community engagement. Each project offered a different perspective, but all shared a common thread: meaningful connection. Days were spent working alongside people from diverse backgrounds, sharing stories, exchanging knowledge, and learning how culture, environment, and community influence one another.
Living in unfamiliar places required adaptability and humility. New customs, languages, perspectives, and ways of life challenged assumptions and encouraged growth. Through teaching English, practicing Spanish, and participating in daily community life, communication became less about language alone and more about curiosity, presence, and a genuine willingness to understand others.
What emerged from these experiences was a deeper appreciation for the diversity of human experience and the many ways people cultivate belonging, resilience, and relationship with the land. Whether participating in sustainability projects, supporting local businesses, or simply sharing meals and conversations, the greatest lessons often came from the people themselves.
This chapter reinforced the belief that learning does not happen only through formal education. Some of the most meaningful knowledge is gained through immersion, service, and the willingness to step into unfamiliar places with an open mind. The relationships formed, perspectives gained, and cultural exchanges experienced throughout Latin America continue to influence how I view the world today.
